Lowry’s imagery isn’t the only heavy-handed aspect of Under the Volcano. The prose, too, is both richly evocative and unrestrained—a riotous orgy of logophilia, thick with allusions to literature both classic and obscure, which creates an almost literally intoxicating effect. Under the Volcano therefore achieves a remarkable goal: its prose feels completely shitfaced.
