Do you know what day it is today?
Yes yes, it’s Thursday – thanks for the dad joke, thanks.
But, did you know, it is also: Dolly Parton’s birthday!
However that’s not what we particularly actually want to celebrate today. Although, while we’re here: many happy returns, Ms. Parton. Congratulations on another trip around the sun.
What today really truly madly deeply is for us, is this: it’s our tenth birthday. Us! And we mean exactly – it’s exactly our tenth birthday. Ten years old! Ten big ones.
You see, the very very very first issue of our magazine: the official publication date of it was 19th January, 2007.
Look, we’re not lying, this isn’t fake news, it’s right there on the front cover (which also doubled as the first page of the issue, because 2007 publishing was A Far and Distant Time in the Past, where things were alien and different):
On particular this Friday, the 19th day of the first month of year 2007, founding editor Ronnie Scott pushed forth a paper-and-ink thing out into the world, and it was titled The Lifted Brow. And he saw what he had made, and saw that it was very good. And evening passed and morning came, marking this, the best day.
Since then we have published thirty-two print issues in total: more than a million words in print (plus all those comics and all that artwork!) from more than 1000 contributors. And we’ve paid them all, each and every single one – a truly diverse lot, from all corners and walks. And we’ve posted a huge amount of pieces on our website – all those book reviews and all that cultural and social commentary. And we have run so so so many events. And created writing prizes. And we’ve expanded into book publishing. And just kept having fun and kept doing the serious work that we all at TLB truly believe makes the world a better place to live in, in many small and different and vital ways.
Still, at our core, in our hearts, is the little literary magazine that could: the attack journal that just won’t go away. We started in Brisbane, we moved to Melbourne, we moved to Sydney, we moved back to Melbourne, and through it all we have grown in every quantifiable and qualifiable way you can name. Since day one our subscriber numbers have never decreased, since day one our community has grown larger and tighter, since day one our fanaticism for finding and incubating and publishing the most challenging and interesting ideas and stories has not diminished, not even a little.
So, we hear you ask: “Whatever can we do to celebrate, good and sweet The Lifted Brow?!?!” And we can tell you that the very first magazine launch we have this year, in March, will be a big and beautiful birthday bash, and that we’d just love for you to come.
But for now, for today, for this tenth birthday day of ours: if you wanted to sneak us a little gift, you have to know that nothing else would make us more happy than if you were to subscribe or renew your subscription. As always, it is you, the readers of the work we publish, who give us more energy than you could ever know. It is you, with your hard-earned and hard-to-give-up dollars, who allow us to pay our printing bills and our contributor invoices and all the other costs that go into running a not-for-profit literary publishing organisation.
Sign on for another year of The Lifted Brow! We have, as always, some exciting stuff in the works for 2017. And we’d just love to keep skipping and stumbling through this mad universe with you for another ten more years. That new peregrination starts today.
